MENA Fem Movement for Economical, Development and Ecological Justice

For Africa and the Global South: A Call to Action on Debt Justice under South Africa’s G20 Presidency

MenaFem joins global call for debt justice under South Africa’s G20 Presidency.

MenaFem has joined more than 160 civil society organizations and global networks in signing a collective letter addressed to President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, calling for bold leadership and decisive action on debt justice during South Africa’s presidency of the G20.

It calls for a UN Framework Convention on Sovereign Debt, fair and transparent restructuring mechanisms, and the protection of essential social spending on health, education, gender equality, and climate resilience. The signatories also advocate for the creation of a Borrowers’ Club and an African Credit Rating Agency, as well as measures to ensure responsible lending and borrowing practices.

MenaFem’s participation reflects its continued commitment to economic justice and feminist analyses of debt and development, emphasizing that no sustainable development or climate justice can be achieved. At the same time, countries in the Global South remain trapped in cycles of unsustainable debt.
