Background

MENAFemMovement for Economic Development and Ecological Justice is a feminist organization committed to promoting systemic change for climate and economic justice across the MENA region. Our work centers on challenging existing power structures, advocating for inclusive policies, and supporting grassroots mobilization.

Position

The Climate and Economic Justice Officer will support the organization’s climate and economic justice initiatives through research, advocacy, campaign development, and stakeholder engagement. This position plays a critical role in advancing the organization’s strategic goals on climate justice, economic equity, and feminist development in the MENA region. The Climate and Economic Justice Program under MENAFem Movement is focused on addressing systemic inequalities and injustices embedded in environmental and climate policy. It centers on key themes such as energy resource equity, just transition finance, and the urgent need to end fossil fuel financing. The program operates through interconnected campaigns—Debt and Climate Finance, Just Transition, Accountability, and international climate negotiations. Through multilingual blogs, toolkits, and infographics, the program also emphasizes knowledge production and dissemination on climate-gender intersections, and the global implications of policy decisions made in the Global North.

Responsibilities and Scope of Work

The Climate and Economic Justice Officer will undertake the following tasks and responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on international financial institutions’ economic and climate-related policies, with a focus on their impact on the MENA region.

  • Produce high-quality reports and analyses that contribute to the organization’s advocacy and policy work.

  • Develop and implement advocacy campaigns around climate justice, sovereign debt, and development financing for MENA countries.

  • Engage with international organizations (e.g., IMF, World Bank) to advocate for feminist and just climate and economic policies.

  • Write articles, policy briefs, background notes, and other materials to communicate complex issues to a range of stakeholders.

  • Support project implementation including monitoring of project budgets and deliverables.

  • Coordinate with stakeholders across sectors (civil society, government, multilateral institutions) to ensure participatory and inclusive advocacy processes.

  • Proficient use of social media platforms for advocacy, outreach, and engagement, including creating content and managing accounts.

  • Provide administrative and logistical support for events, meetings, and program activities.

  • Ability to independently identify, assess, and coordinate external services such as interpretation, translation, and graphic design to support program needs.

  • Support resource mobilization efforts including grant writing and donor reporting.

  • Uphold and integrate feminist, anti-oppression, and intersectional approaches in all aspects of the role.

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate should meet the following requirements:

  • Degree in environmental studies, economics, development studies, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated experience in climate advocacy and/or economic justice initiatives.

  • Solid understanding of climate finance, economic development, and international policy frameworks.

  • Proven ability to produce research and policy outputs tailored to diverse audiences.

  • Familiarity with international financial institutions and their engagement with climate/economic policy in the Global South.

  • Experience in project management, budgeting, grant writing, and fundraising.

  • Strong communication skills in both English and Arabic (written and verbal).

  • Experience working in or with MENA-based civil society, government, or multilateral organizations.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks independently under tight deadlines with attention to detail.
