We’re Hiring: Media, Communications, & Advocacy Officer

Location: Remote/hybrid within the MENA region preferably Morocco. 

Starting date: ASAP 

MENA Fem Movement for Economic, Development, and Ecological Justice envisions a new global economic system based on intersectional feminist principles, human rights, and ecological justice driven by the needs of communities and the marginalized, in particular in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and beyond.

Our mission is to confront poverty, deprivation, inequalities and lack of substantive democratic rights by empowering communities and vulnerable groups to resist all forms of injustices and inequalities. The network was established in 2023 and consists of local and regional organizations dedicated to achieving equitable development and fostering a just, ecologically, sustainable feminist economy. The movement targets influencing policies related to debt management, economic justice, and ecological justice. This involves organizing and mobilizing advocacy campaigns to effect policy change, producing alternative narratives, knowledge, and research, and challenging unjust economic systems.

MENAFem is seeking a passionate and dedicated individual to join our team as Media & Communications Officer. The Media & Communications Officer will be responsible for planning, developing, and implementing communication and advocacy strategies that promote policy and practice change in line with MENA Fem Movement’s vision and mission. The incumbent will also be responsible for updating MENAFem’s social media platforms, developing partnerships and coordinating with other relevant organizations, and forming relationships with regional and global media outlets and journalists. The selected candidate will be expected to follow and respect the intersectional feminist anti-colonial approach of the movement and ensure it is displayed in the movement’s narrative. 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Support the development and review of MENAFem’s communication and advocacy strategies.
  • Develop MENAFem’s  media strategy including content and distribution 
  • Determine effectiveness and seek continual improvements of online presence and communication initiatives 
  • Manage and support the design and implementation of MENAFem’s advocacy campaigns and partnerships with members and technical working groups.
  • Maintain communication with partners and working groups and develop an updated list of those partnerships.
  • Manage and regularly update MENAFem’s online platforms including our website, twitter/X, Facebook, LinkedIn and any other platforms.
  • Edit and translate blog posts and other content for publishing on MENAFem’s website.
  • Provide support to organization of conferences, workshops, seminars, training, and delivery of outputs.
  • Report on workshops, campaigns, reports, interventions and other activities the movement is involved in.
  • Write, develop, and disseminate press releases, periodic newsletters and other communication materials 
  • Report on major news from international funding institutions in coordination with the MENAFem team.
  • Develop and maintain contact information, materials and relationships with journalists and media outlets (print, TV, radio, web etc.) within and outside the MENA region to increase coverage of our issues of concern and supplement our advocacy efforts in the media (print, broadcast, and digital).
  • Develop and maintain an updated list of MENAFem’s donors and potential donors.
  • Support preparation of background materials, briefs, and information kits for donors.
  • Prepare narrative reports 
  • Conduct some administrative work
  • Any other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, candidates should meet the following criteria: 

  1. At least 5 years of experience in communications, developing and implementing advocacy campaigns, and managing social media accounts.
  2. A bachelor’s degree in mass communications, journalism, environmental studies, economics, gender studies, development studies, or a related field is required. 
  3. Familiarity with international climate and economic policy debates and their relation to development policy
  4. Knowledge of different social media platforms, SEO, analytics, and advocacy tools.
  5. Experience in managing WordPress sites.
  6. Track record in writing, editing articles, reports, and press releases.
  7. Demonstrated ability to engage with the topics that the organization targets.
  8. Excellent verbal and written command of both Arabic and English is essential. French is an asset.
  9. Basic design and layout skills and adeptness in using photo and video editing software.
  10. Project/Grant Writing and Fundraising knowledge is essential.
  11. This post requires administrative skills 
  12. A collaborative mindset, the ability to work independently, time-management skills, and effective problem-solving capabilities are critical in this role.
  13. Previous experience in gender equity and economic and/or climate justice is preferred.
  14. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders from different sectors and backgrounds, including community-based organizations, national and international organizations, and government agencies.
  15. Commitment to feminist principles and intersectional approaches.
  16. Demonstrated commitment to working within an anti-oppression and intersectional framework/comprehensive performance of the job function.
