MENA Fem Movement for Economical, Development and Ecological Justice

MENAFem Annual Feminist Economics School 2025 – Rabat

From May 13 to 15, 2025, feminist scholars, activists, and civil society actors from across the Middle East and North Africa convened in Rabat, Morocco for the first MENAFem Annual Feminist Economics School, organized by MENA Fem Movement for Economic, Development, and Ecological Justice.

This three-day event created a dynamic space for learning, solidarity, and collective strategizing around feminist alternatives to the dominant economic models in the region. Through participatory sessions, in-depth discussions, and regional exchange, the school aimed to build capacity, amplify feminist voices, and reimagine economic systems rooted in justice, care, and sustainability.

The school included contributions from Mayada Hassanain, Imene Cherif, Haneen Shaheen, Fatna Afid, Asmaa Abu Mezied, Shereen Talaat, Attiya Waris—UN Independent Expert on Foreign Debt & Human Rights, Hend Salem, Katie Tobin, & Fiana Arbab.

  • Create a platform for regional knowledge exchange.

  • Strengthen connections between feminist civil society actors.

  • Build the capacity of feminist movements in the region.

  • Social Reproduction Theory (with Mayada Hassanain & Asmaa Abu Mezied)

  • Gender and Labor Markets in MENA (with Fatna Afid)

  • Intersectionality Training (Hend Salem)

Day 3: Environmental Justice & Feminist Critiques of Development Finance

  • Land & Agrarian Justice and Food Security (with Haneen Shaheen)

  • Climate Finance & Ecological Justice (with Haneen Shaheen)

  • Panel: False Solutions and Co-option of Demands (with Haneen Shaheen, Shereen Talaat, & Imene Cherif)

  • Panel: Feminist Critique of Financing for Development (with Attiya Waris, Imene Cherif, Katie Tobin, & Fiana Arbab)

The school closed with a call to deepen cross-border regional feminist alliances and to continue building shared feminist visions for economic and ecological justice in the region.
