Global civil society warns the IMF against a return to deeper austerity

MENAFem Movement for Economic, Development and Ecological Justice has joined more than 130 civil society organisations in signing an open letter to the IMF Executive Board ahead of the final discussions on the Review of Program Design and Conditionality (RoC).

The letter calls on the IMF to move away from frontloaded austerity and ensure that its programmes do not deepen inequality, undermine public investment or shift the costs of economic adjustment onto the most vulnerable.

In the MENA region, where many countries are already facing severe debt pressures and shrinking fiscal space, IMF conditionalities can have far-reaching social and economic consequences.
