Beyond Austerity: Feminist Perspectives on the Role of Bretton Woods Institutions
Civil Society Policy Forum, IMF-WBG Annual Meetings 2024 - Session Recording
We are excited to share the recording of our Civil Society Policy Forum 2024 session, titled “Beyond Austerity: Feminist Perspectives on the Role of Bretton Woods Institutions.”
This session brought together feminist voices from the Global South to critically examine the profound impact of GDP-driven economic policies and austerity measures imposed by the IMF and World Bank on nations in the Global South. The discussion highlighted how these measures disproportionately affect women, the working class, and the environment, using case studies from the MENA region, South Asia, and Latin America.
Our panel explored grassroots resistance to these policies and presented feminist alternatives that prioritize inclusivity, equity, and sustainability. By challenging the narrow focus of current economic frameworks, we aimed to inspire new pathways for achieving social and economic justice.
This session underscored the urgency of moving beyond austerity to adopt economic models that center care, sustainability, and equity. We hope this discussion serves as a catalyst for rethinking the role of Bretton Woods Institutions in shaping a fairer global economy.
